The Bluegrass Grill

I took a few days off from my day job and am wrapping this project my sister from another mother suggested, a song for the Bluegrass Grill.  I heard my mother talk about the Bluegrass Grill and how it was a popular meeting place when she was young.  I did some investigating and found a menu online and wrote the lyrics over a few days.  The tune came easily.  The challenge was in writing the parts and figuring out how to convey the idea that cruising to the Bluegrass was a rite of passage for generations of teens.  Thanks to Audrey for the suggestion!  You can listen to it here and look for it on my next CD which I’m working on now…

  3. I love anything that has to do with the wonderful Bluegrass Grill. Ashland is not the same after the Bluegrass closed. I am a baby boomer and so loved going here to just drive around but not only that the food was great. Sure wish we still had the Bluegrass Grill.

  5. Rannie and I were carhops in 1956. What a great time . . . working where everyone and I mean everyone hung out. I left the next year, but, as you all know, Rannie stayed and eventually bought it. When young people ask about “the Grass” I always tell them to watch American Graffiti. It’s close, but the Bluegrass was better!

    2. Many wonderful memories growing up in the 50’s…thankful for our long-time friends! Little did we know then that ‘The Bluegrass’ would be our life!

  6. Back in the mid 80’s I had the pleasure of getting in on some interviews with Keith Whitley and Dwight Yoakam. The conversation always turned into a remembrance of good times cruising the Bluegrass Grill. Yep, these guys and many unknowns made the trip up from Paintsville and Pikeville and such to have that big city experience.

  7. Many hours were spent here with friends from the early 60’s until I graduated from UK in 1967 and left Ashland permanently to live in Lexington.

  8. Loved this place, they had the best strawberry pie, onion rings and the big flying saucer, but I remember cruising it around and round, best looking carhops

    I was hoping you might be able to help me with something or perhaps you can point me in the right direction. I am working with a local car Dealership and we are decorating their showroom floor and they want to use imagery from the city with some local landmarks, specifically The Bluegrass Grill. I know it closed down a few years ago, but I was hoping you had some archived photos of the restauarant before it closed

    Would you have access to any photos of the restaurant that you can share or can you point me in the right direction of someone who might be able to help?

    Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
